Our Revolution: A Future to Believe In by Bernie Sanders is non-fiction regarding Bernie’s political career and the campaign he ran for president in 2016. The beginning of the book begins with Bernie’s political career – how it all got started. He speaks about how he became the mayor of Burlington, VT and how he moved from mayor to the House of Representatives to the Senate. He talks about how his campaign got started and why he decided to run; he takes through his campaign, how they decided to run and organize the campaign, what they did right and what they could have done better. He outlines some of the decisions they made which he believes was a mistake, but he also points to the decisions they made that he felt were right.
The book is broken into two parts; the first details his political career and presidential campaign. The second part details his clear and consistent message of a universal healthcare system, free tuition at public colleges and universities, comprehensive criminal justice reform, create jobs by strengthening or rebuilding our infrastructure, move away from fossil fuels to renewable and efficient energy options, raising the federal minimum wage to $15 and expanding Social Security and other public programs. He talks about his plan for how to get that done – which is where the money to afford these programs or changes would come from.
The book is not a thrilling read, but not too many books pertaining to politics and policies are; it is well written and informational. It reiterates Senator Sanders’ entire message while he was campaigning and the details of how he would get it all done. It brings all of the numerous points he talked about at the different rallies he held all over the country into one book. Although the book is not necessarily a page-turner, there is a lot of useful information presented and presented in a way that makes sense. He makes a convincing argument for the changes proposed in his book.
The information about his political career and why he chose to run for president were interesting and there were some humorous parts in it also. There are a few pages in the middle of the book with some color photos on them and there are some other black and white photos throughout the book. Overall, the book is very Bernie and the retelling of the campaign, the problems we face, the changes to help fix those problems and how he plans to get it all done. The most important point he makes in the book is that he cannot do this alone and needs the help of each and every American who wants to win their democracy back. I recommend this book to anyone who supported Bernie Sanders’ campaign and to anyone who is interested in politics or this past presidential election.
